Gallatin was established in 1802 as the permanent county seat of Sumner County. Tennessee's General Assembly appointed commissioners in 1801 to purchase land and establish a town for the county's seat of justice, and in February 1802 they purchased approximately 42.5 acres from James Trousdale. The community was named for Albert Gallatin, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Andrew Jackson was among the early purchasers of property after the town was surveyed and platted in 1803, the same year the first courthouse and jail were constructed around the central public square. Gallatin was incorporated in 1815. During the Civil War, its railroad and proximity to the Cumberland River made the community strategically important, and Union forces occupied the town for much of the conflict. Gallatin faced additional hardship in 1873 when a cholera epidemic caused numerous deaths. Agriculture remained important for decades, while twentieth-century industrialization and the creation of nearby Old Hickory Lake helped reshape the community.
